Dame Judi Dench (“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children“, “Spectre“) reprises her role as Queen Victoria in another chapter of the famous queens life when “Victoria & Abdul” comes to theaters on September 22nd. Queen Victoria, now 81 years old and in her 62nd year reigning as the Queen, finds herself questioning why she keeps going on and she soon finds the answer in the strangest location. Sent from India to serve the Queen , Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal, “Furious 7“, “3 Idiots“) is the answer to the Queens question and the two soon become fast friends. The Queen now with a new liveliness sets out to learn everything that she can from the young man much to the dismay and scrutiny of her family and the rest of her British royal cabinet. “Victoria & Abdul” gives us a look into a part of the Queens personal life that had until now never been discussed and very few knew about.
“Victoria & Abdul“, which was adapted by Lee Hall (“War Horse“, “Billy Elliot“) from a novel by Shrabani Basu, looks to be another British drama tinged with humor and heart. Besides the brilliant talent of Dame Judi Dench and the Bollywood icon Ali Fazal, Michael Gambon(“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows pt 1 & 2“, “Hail, Caesar!“),Eddie Izzard(“The LEGO Batman Movie“, “Hannibal [TV Series]“) and Tim Pigott-Smith(Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, “Quantum of Solace“) lend their unique voices to some of “Victoria & Abdul’s” pivotal roles. Honestly, with the talent this movie has coupled with the beautiful, elaborate wardrobe and spectacular scenery how could director Stephen Frears(“Florence Foster Jenkins“, “Philomena“) go wrong. My hunch is if you are a fan of Dame Judi Dench or simply just a fan of British humor I would wager you are going to fall in love with this film. As for me, I will be skipping high tea to make my way to see “Victoria & Abdul“.
