Even though the rumor has been orbiting in the Star Wars universe for some years, it’s not until now that we have enough information to confirm that Disney and Lucasfilm are in the early stages of the next stand-alone Star Wars film, focusing in the legendary Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Although the film doesn’t have a script yet, according to The Hollywood Reporter who recently broke the news about this project, the Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader, The Hours) is already in talks to direct the spin-off.
The movie is one of several projects being developed by the studio. Apart from the Skywalker saga that is already on course, there are also projects for films focusing on both Yoda and Jabba the Hutt. A stand-alone Han Solo movie, part of the Star Wars Anthology that follows the 2016 film Rogue One, is now in its final stages of production. The film would be about the adventures of a young Han Solo and Chewbacca long before they even meet Luke Skywalker and join The Rebellion. The film is expected to be released in May 2018.
If you’re a true Star Wars fan, this news will probably have more impact and meaning for you, first of all, because it’s Obi-Wan, one of the most representative characters in the Star Wars saga since A New Hope ’till the prequels. Obi-Wan is not only the Jedi who trained Anakin Skywalker (a.k.a. Darth Vader), but also was a massive figure in Luke’s training in order to overcome The Empire. However, there is a lot of Obi-Wan’s story we still don’t know about.
Now the big question is: when will the plot be set in Obi-Wan’s life? It could be a film about his origins or a storyline set between Star Wars: Episode III – The Revenge of The Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, which in my opinion would be the best choice and what most fans would like to see. There is a twenty-year gap from Darth Vader’s awakening in Episode III and the creation of The Death Star in Episode IV, where Obi-Wan Kenobi is forced to hide from The Empire in Tatooine, but still manages to take care of Luke Skywalker even though they’re not together. That could be a great time frame to set the film, not only because of the numerous number of possible story plots that could be developed to answer some of the fans’ biggest remaining questions, but also because this allows to bring back Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, Big Fish) as Obi-Wan, who has already stated his desire to continue playing this character.
“I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes”, McGregor told Entertainment Weekly last April. Besides, we all know this talented actor has been one of the great assets to George Lucas-built franchise. “I’ll say it publicly, here, now. I’d be happy to do the story between Episode III, that I finished in, and Episode IV that Alec Guinness started in. I think that would be good. Disney should definitely do that”, McGregor said at the Edinburgh International Film Festival back in June 2015.
Whatever the final focus of the film turns out to be, we’re excited to know there will be a story that honours such a key character in the Star Wars universe; and hopefully be a spin-off of such high level as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
